To Celebrate the Life of David Flory

March 17, 1953 to May 4, 2025

David Flory passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at a hospice facility in Mill Valley, California, with his wife Mimi and daughter Hannah by his side. We will always remember David as the worldwide adventurer who lit up our lives with his smile and his laughter.

David was born on March 17, 1953, the son of Angela and Fred Flory, in Portland, Oregon and grew up in McMinnville, OR.  As a young boy, his passions were working with tools to build things, exploring the wilderness (he was an Eagle Scout!), playing tennis and reading (per the elementary school librarian, he read every book in the library).  He earned his BA from Lewis and Clark College, working part-time as a gas station attendant and car mechanic and taking gap years to work full time in construction. He capped out his college experience, studying at the University of Paris VIII for a BA in Political Science and MA in Philosophy. While in Europe, he worked in Switzerland for several months, working on construction sites with his friend Ruedi and Ruedi’s family-owned electrical company. In 1978 he embarked on 18 months of travel across Europe and Asia, including an attempt to summit Mt. Everest. He landed in Japan where he worked at a firm that provided economic and engineering services to developing countries in South and Southeast Asia, including Bangladesh, Burma, Philippines, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. He rose to the Assistant Manager level and at the age of 32 was the youngest Assistant Manager in the firm. David returned to the US in 1985 to get his MBA at Cornell University, where he met his wife, Mimi. He then worked in banking  in New York and in 1991 David and Mimi moved to London, where David pursued his own investment business.  In 1996 they made their home in Sausalito California and in 2002 they became the proud parents of Hannah Flory.

David was a welcoming, charming man who always looked out for everyone, prioritizing the needs of family and friends above his own. He also aimed for the best and poured his heart and soul into every endeavor, be it helping Hannah with her homework and education, managing home improvements or planning overseas trips. He was a powerful presence in all our lives.

He is survived by his wife, Mimi, and his daughter, Hannah; his sisters Susan and Sandra; his numerous wonderful relatives, as well as the special life-long friends he made throughout his world-wide adventures.

David’s life will be celebrated on June 3rd, 2025 at 2:00 pm at Fernwood Cemetery: 301 Tennessee Valley Rd, Mill Valley, CA 94941.
