A cemetery is a sacred place. The grounds in which our loved ones are buried are a collection of legacies and memories that families can visit for generations to come. When we part with someone that we care about, it’s important to have a place to visit for a moment of peace or a celebration of their life. Fernwood Cemetery is proud to have honored the lives of San Francisco residents for more than two hundred years.

If you prefer a traditional, conventional approach to ground burial, the historic section of Fernwood cemetery is a fitting resting place for your family member or loved one. A limited number of gravesites are available, surrounded by mature trees. Many offer a beautiful view of Mount Tamalpais or Richardson Bay, making Fernwood a unique San Francisco cemetery. Embalming, any type of casket, cut-and-polished headstones and monuments, and bronze markers are allowed only in this part of the cemetery. Outer burial containers (vaults) may be required for health, safety and ecological reasons. We also offer cremation burial spaces in this area of our cemetery grounds.

This extraordinary section of Fernwood Cemetery has been in existence on this site since the late 1800’s and has witnessed many years of San Francisco history. Set in a beautiful wooded area of native heritage oak and bay laurel trees, Fernwood Cemetery is one of the most beautiful historic places in the city of San Francisco. Its early gravesites are reminders of Marin County’s original Portuguese pioneers, many who fished in the waters of San Francisco Bay or worked on our local dairy farms and ranches. Some were members of the fraternal benefits society, Woodmen of the World. As their gravestones say, ”dum tacet clamet” — or “though silent he speaks.” As time has passed and our city has grown, the Fernwood burial ground has become a testament and celebration of people from all walks of life. Each gravesite is a sacred memorial to honor your loved one at their final resting place.
