Project Overview
Fernwood Cemetery has announced plans to expand its existing cemetery to help meet the growing and urgent need for burial, cremation, and interment space in Marin County. Fernwood has served the community since the 1890s and the expansion will ensure that families can continue to find respectful, meaningful, and local burial options.
Why This Expansion Is Needed
- Marin County experiences approximately 2,100–2,400 deaths each year
- No new burial capacity is currently being created in the county
- Some local existing cemeteries face uncertainty or closure
- Fernwood Cemetery is approaching full capacity
- Without action, families will face increasing difficulty finding local burial space
Commitment to Inclusivity
Fernwood has worked with local congregations representing diverse religious and cultural traditions to ensure the expansion meets community needs.
- Supports culturally appropriate burial practices
- Addresses the shortage of burial space in Marin County for many religions
- Responds to concerns following the loss of Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery as an option
- Builds on Fernwood’s long-standing reputation as a respectful resting place
Environmental Stewardship & Design
The expansion is intentionally designed to be low-impact and environmentally sensitive.
- Preserves the Alta Trail
- Maintains access for hikers and dog walkers
- Formalizes trail connections between Marin City and the regional trail network
- Blends naturally into the landscape
- Enhances fire mitigation and emergency preparedness
- A quieter and more natural alternative to more intensive development
Size and Location of the Expansion
- Approximately 32 acres of vacant land
- Adjacent to the existing Fernwood Cemetery
- Extends from Tam Valley toward Marin City
- Located in unincorporated Mill Valley
