Larry died on September 18, 2026, in San Francisco, California. He was 75.
Born on July 16, 1951, Larry lived a life marked by energy, humor, music, a deep engagement with the world around him, and love for his family and community of neighbors in Corte Madera. He is survived by his wife, Helen Maniates; his daughters, Zoe Garvin (Sal Rivas) and Lia Garvin (Wes Sularz); his granddaughters, Maya and Eleni; his sister, Bonnie Garvin (Jim Lafferty); and his dog, Penny.
A green burial will be held at Fernwood Cemetery in Mill Valley, California, at 12:30 p.m. on September 26, 2026. A celebration of life will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Doctors Without Borders.

Larry was such a great individual. He was such a positive addition to my everyday existence. We would always see one another at the gym and speak on anything and everything under the sun. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and I share my deepest condolences. He will be missed.
Larry was a very engaging guy. I met him often at the Bay Club in San Francisco while we were working out. We would usually discuss politics. I consider myself a progressive, Larry was even farther left. We would frequently continue our dialogues via texting. At lunch one day I discovered much more about the life Larry lived. To put it simply, Larry didn’t just “talk the talk,” he passionately “walked the walk.” The world will miss him.
Such a unique man with a passion for life! I have known him for over thirty years! He was always friendly and loved to discuss various subjects. I was so fond of him as we both resonated politically and shared similar world views. I will never forget him!
Larry was a ray of sunlight on any day that you’d see him. His quick wit and storytelling were always entertaining. I loved hearing about the many chapters of his life and his positive outlook. We will all miss seeing him at the Bay Club.
Larry had a special ability to change every single room that he walked into no matter how he was feeling or what he was going through. He would never let it be known and he would shed a bright light on each and every person that he talked to going to miss him very very much
