Leslie Owens Grays was born on October 19, 1952, in San Francisco, to Galveston Grays Jr. and Bonnell N. Grays. Raised alongside his 9 brothers and 3 sisters in a large family deeply rooted in faith, love, resilience, and unity, Leslie grew into a man known for his strength, wisdom, loyalty, and unwavering devotion to those he loved.
Leslie attended Polytechnic High School during the late 1960s, where he became known as one of the greatest point guards of his time. If you knew Leslie, then you knew he truly had game. Basketball was more than a sport to him. It was part of who he was, and the same passion, discipline, and heart he displayed on the court carried throughout his life.
As one of the eldest brothers, Lesliebecame the glue of the family for many years. He carried the weight of leadership with quiet dignity, always making sure his family remained connected, supported, and cared for. His presence brought comfort and stability, and he was someone his family could always depend on for guidance, laughter, encouragement, and love.
Leslie shared a lifelong love story with his childhood best friend and first love, Roberta Grays. Their marriage was built on friendship, deep love, and enduring commitment. Together they created a home centered around family, compassion, and togetherness. From their union came their beloved son, Maurice Grays, who was a tremendous source of pride and joy in Leslie’s life. Leslie also cherished his daughter-in-law, Tiffany Hopper, and found immense happiness in being a grandfather to Elijah, Makai, and Tristen, who brought light and joy into his later years.
Known for his warm heart and humble spirit, Leslie touched countless lives through simple acts of kindness, wisdom, and presence. He believed deeply in family and understood the importance of showing up for the people you love. Whether through conversation, support, or simply his steady presence, Leslie made people feel valued and cared for.
Leslie departed this life on May 16, 2026, in San Francisco. His passing came just three months after the loss of his beloved wife, Roberta, the love of his life, a heartbreak he carried deeply. Though their earthly departures were separated by only a short time, their enduring love remains a testament to the bond they shared throughout their lives.
While his family mourns his loss, they also celebrate a life rich in love, sacrifice, strength, and devotion. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, and his memory will continue to be cherished for generations to come.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Roberta Grays; his parents, Galveston Grays Jr. and Bonnell Grays; his brothers, Michael Grays and Duane Grays; and beloved family members who welcomed him into eternal rest.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving son, Maurice Grays; daughter-in-law Tiffany Hopper; grandchildren Elijah, Makai, and Tristen; his brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, extended family, lifelong friends, and all those whose lives were forever touched by his kindness and love.
