Fernwood funeral services
If you have recently lost a loved one, please send a message to our staff or call (415) 383-7100 to reach a family service counselor who will assist with next steps.
We meet families with gentle and dutiful care throughout our funeral arrangement process. When a death occurs, we understand how difficult and destabilizing it can leave for those making the arrangements. Whether you’ve experienced a recent loss or are pre-planning to make it easier for those closest to you, you’ll find dedicated staff you can trust with the details and depth of your final wishes.
Below is an outline of the care your family will receive at the time of loss.
Bringing your loved one into our care
At any time of day, a hospice or a family member can call Fernwood to let us know someone has passed. Our transport care team will bring your loved one into our care within 2 – 3 hours locally. Because our facilities are all in one location, your loved one will stay in the care of our trusted, dedicated team.
Shortly after transportation, your funeral director will begin collecting information for death certificates and other essential documents to ensure a smooth process.
Planning a funeral or memorial
At Fernwood, each service is designed to uniquely reflect the person being honored, from their background and cultural traditions to their personality and passions. Our experienced staff holds reverence and familiarity with a diverse range of funeral rites, and will support your family with traditions old and new.
The funerals and memorials held at Fernwood are deeply personal, with families often bringing their own creative touch to create a one-of-a-kind tribute to their loved one in our beautiful Remembrance Room.
Selecting a final resting place
Our stunning cemetery is centrally located, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge, and is abundant with native flora and fauna. During the arrangement process, your funeral director will guide you through your options according to your preference for burial or cremation. At this time, a graveside service may also be planned to honor your loved one at their final resting place.
Guiding the day of service
When the date of the service arrives, our staff will be there to assist every step of the way. From valet parking to service coordination, we’ll intuitively manage the details so you and your family can focus on gathering together and honoring your loved one. Whether it’s a funeral in our peaceful Remembrance Room or a graveside service in our scenic cemetery, you and your guests will be met with gentle support and dutiful care.
If you have questions about our range of services or are curious about pre-planning, we invite you to arrange a tour of our facilities and grounds.

Funeral & Memorial Services
At Fernwood, we hold deep reverence for our role in planning and guiding meaningful funeral and memorial services. Each gathering is unique and customized to reflect the life being honored. In our Remembrance Room, you’ll find an open, modern space that can accommodate traditions old and new. Whether you’re seeking a service that’s secular or religious, our dedicated staff will help you with the details.
Direct or Witnessed Cremation
Cremation at Fernwood takes place on-site, just steps from our funeral home. As one of the few mortuaries to perform cremation without transfer to an off-site facility, we offer the reassurance and ease of knowing all care is carried out by our experienced team.
As part of our commitment to environmentally-conscious practices, each cremation at Fernwood is paired with the planting and long-term care of native trees in the Sierra Nevada, through our partnership with veritree. This project is designed to more than offset carbon emissions over the coming decades and support the environmental restoration of the area post-wildfire. Carried out at no additional cost to families, each family receives a digital certificate with the location and number of trees planted in their loved one’s honor. See how many trees we’ve planted here.
A range of options is available within our peaceful cemetery after cremation, including:
- Meadows and hills for urn burial
- Winding paths through scattering gardens
- Stone or marble niches for above-ground placement
- Tree-planting for a living memorial
Tree Planting & Memorialization Options
Memorialization offers an enduring way to honor your loved one’s legacy. Engraved boulders and river stones mark the gravesites in our natural cemetery, while traditional headstones, monuments, and benches pay tribute to those in our traditional section. Tree-planting is also a meaningful option for a living memorial that grows over time.
During one of the most difficult times of our lives, Raymond and the team at Fernwood Funeral home provided much compassion, professionalism, and genuine care that went far beyond our expectations. He took the time to listen to our family’s wishes and guided us through every detail with patience and understanding.

Gorgeous cemetery, and the only local one that offers truly green burial options (body wrapped in a biodegradable shroud and placed directly in earth, no casket or grave liner). Beautiful views from the higher parts, and the lower parts have their own kind of natural beauty, emphasizing native plants and minimal landscaping. Perfect for outdoorsy people.

Our family had an exceptional experience with Fernwood. Kind, knowledgeable, attentive staff. A beautiful space for the memorial services and the grounds are lovely. My sister and I worked with Sonia G on actualizing the stone for our parents’ site and she really pulled it off for us in record time and accuracy.

Natural green burial & funeral home services
Green burial
Green burial is about simplicity and a deep commitment to the conservation of the environment. This burial method allows the body to naturally decompose and be recycled into the earth.
- 100% natural
- No chemicals or toxins
- Reduced carbon footprint
This is the most beautiful cemetery in the Bay Area! …beautiful trees and rolling hills and natural as they use engraved rocks versus headstone… I returned a week later to buy the space next to my mom. It’s that beautiful and incredibly affordable.
